Europe is without doubt the home of castle hotels. They are the living testimonial of a tradition and historical need from which building was derived over the centuries. Owners of castles were rich and powerful families wanting to demonstrate publicly their riches Wars and conflicts of interests and power were the main drive behind the building of many (if not most) of the castles handed down to us over the centuries.

In the UK the majority of existing castles were built during the so called dark ages (medieval period). As the Renaissance gained momentum starting from Italy, commerce and trade blossomed generating riches which were invested in building luxury villas and castle estates for the new and rich aristocrats of the time. The initiative spread quickly throughout the aristocrats of Europe and architects flocked to Italy to master innovative building techniques and returned to their own countries with new ideas.
